Not for the impatient

PG from Newcastle, 28th November, 2004

A terrible remake that is annoying from start to finish. The beginning is especially annoying when the crew of space ship feel it necessary to investigate an enourmous electromagnetic storm cloud - BUT WHY?

The thing was like a badly made Star Trek episode with a bit of Lord of The Rings element (armies of apes vs humans in the desert).

Avoid

The Future's bright. The Future's orangutan

mistersafety from Scotland, 22nd December, 2004

What can I say? Is it just me? I thought this film was really rather good! I'm a big fan of Tim Burton and the look of this film and the production values are terrific - you'll find yourself amazed that you can fancy the pants off Helena Bonham Carter in her monkey outfit - and when you compare the effects to the original you can see Hollywood has come an awful long way. I thought it was well-plotted and well put-together, and I couldn't possibly imagine that there would be a twist at the end because of the incredible impact of the original but - no! - there is a twist and I think it's just as good - better actually - than the original. It makes you think back through the story to see how it actually would have been possible. Tim Roth is tremendously scary as an agressive chimpanzee - you'll never be able to look at chimps as cuddly ever again - and the way the film deals with the apes as real, human-sized wild animals as opposed to the original gentrified people in ape costumes is a real plus for me. Okay, the saved humans (Estelle Warren plays a beautiful, but completely wooden, prisoner) are mostly irrelevant and whilst the cameo from Charlton Heston is a nice nod to the original (and turns it on its head to boot) it is too reflective of a film trying too hard to pay homage to its predecessor... ... but, nevertheless, if you enjoyed the original and you want a decent night's entertainment, then this is a perfectly fine film. If you like Mark Wahlberg or Tim Roth or Tim Burton you'll doubly enjoy it. It's not a remake, it is a reimagining, and all the better for it.

Why the criticism???

Daniel Warner from Bideford, Devon, 21st February, 2005

I really can't understand why everyone is so scathing about this. Don't compare it to the 'original' as apart from the name, they are completely different movies. The effects are top notch, and the story makes much more sense than the 'original'. I urge anyone to watch it with an open mind, forgetting the 60s version completely and take it as the enjoyable sci-fi yarn that it is.

Not perfect, but still great

Arbobug from from Dundee, 20th October, 2008

I have heard a lot of criticism for Planet Of The Apes, and I don't think most of it is deserved. Yes, the film was a little flawed, but ultimately, I found it very entertaining. Tim Burton is probably my favourite director, and I think he did a really good job with this. The chosen actors were great, Mark Whalberg and Helena Bonham Carter were perfect for the leading roles. The story was pretty well paced, it moved perhaps a little too fast at the beginning, but was fine from middle to end. I think the best thing about the film was Tim Burton's trademark look, and the fact the Burton always manages to make stories that should be cheesy, into dramatic, and artistic pieces of work. The battle between humans and apes at the end was ace too! Altogether, Planet of the Apes COULD have been better, but since when does the make a film bad? The film is great entertainment, and it's certianly one I will have to take off my rental list, and add to my DVD collection.

Good remake of the classic one !!!

A Customer from Greenock, Scotland, 23rd August, 2007

They really made it good to take the old story and create a new story. Of course effect and other things improved by time and they had more choices. Really nice story. I think the movie would be more popular with an actor which is more known. Can recommend that movie.
