In the world of right-now, it seems as if literally everybody wants to be famous. Thanks to the global phenomenon of reality television, literally anyone can be. From the Director of American Pie & About a Boy, Hugh Grant has never been better as the sleazy, self-centred host of the hugely popular television programme, American Dreamz. As the self-loathing Martin Tweed, Hugh Grant brings new aspiring Dreamz finalists that include Sally (Mandy Moore), a Southern belle who is sugar and spice in front of the camera and not-so-nice in real-life and Omer, a reluctant contestant with a penchant for show tunes. With the President of the United (Dennis Quaid) serving as a guest judge of the final night of the season, the stage is set for an explosive show the nation will never forget.

Sunday Afternoon Film!

cocode36 from Leicestershire, 30th April, 2006

I went to watch this film at the cinema and expected a lot more than was delivered. I should of thought something was unusual when there was only 4 people in this screenings. (including myself).

There was very few funnny parts, and just had a lackluster storyline. Hugh Grant plays the producer/presenter/only judge and is a mean guy (The supposed "Simon" character). To be blunt, its the worst Hugh Grant film i've ever seen. The elimination stages progress and the final 2 are Mandy Moore and an Iraqi who is being taught by his 'camp' cousin how to sing and dance. The president is a special guest judge in order to help his 'PR' after falling into isolation with books and newspapers. The Iraqi is being told by his 'brothers' back in Iraq to blow up the President on the finale.

All in all, its the sort of film you would watch if nothing else was on TV on a Sunday Afternoon after dinner. You'd fall asleep half way through and wake up not really caring what happened at the end!

American Nightmare

Mark777 from Somerset, 1st September, 2006

Why why why did I not listen to the previous reviewer (Sunday Afternoon Film!)?

Saved for a Friday night with girlfriend. Even invited my parents to sit down and watch it. My girlfriend left after 30 minutes, I followed soon after.
15 minutes later I heard a call "can we turn this c**p off".

I will not go into the story line just in case you attempt to brave the feature. I'll just give my opinion which is the film is as weak as a bottle of Kaliber, funny as a heart attack and about as watchable as an episode of Elderaldo- just as cringe worthy.

Read the previously mentioned review and take his advice- watch when extremely tired and with luck you'll fall asleep.

Dreamz of grandeur

Sophie Millward from Marlow, England, 23rd June, 2006

With the self-absorption and hysteria that surrounds the reality TV racket, the industry was surely ripe for satirising. A searingly witty take-off about to hit our screens at any moment. This is not it. Rather unfortunately, as it happens: the film does show at times flashes of how good it could have been - but really this highlights its failure all the more. Mandy Moore and Hugh Grant are convincingly horrible in the lead roles of attention-grabbing Sally Kendoo and the Simon Cowell-alike Martin Tweed, and work surprisingly well together. There are also some excellent intentions in the innocence of Dennis Quaid's President Staton, but the film is so badly executed that any attempt at a third dimension to these cartoonish characters, however well acted, seems tacked on. The scenes in the Middle East likewise do not work at all, only serving to break up the narrative and dissipate any good work that might have been done in setting up the hard and shiny world of the fame-mongers. There were two potential levels for this film to work on: as a clever satire, or as a simple piece of mindless bubble-gum entertainment. Sadly it fails to perform either purpose.

OMG This is soooo BAD!!

A Customer from worcester, 18th July, 2006

This is so bad it's actually funny! The acting is absolutely awful and the story is pointless! But there are some funny bits (which im pretty sure may not have been meant to be funny, but the acting is so bad that you end up laughing) One of those films you certainly dont need to think about..... just fills up some time really. My sister fell asleep towards the end... what does that tell you?

Painful - do not waste a rental list slot

A Customer from Aberdeen, 12th November, 2008

Worst film in years... Even worse than Borat Watching this movie hurt me so much that it made me write a review, which I do when something is very good or really bad. I will include a few ideas to improve this film (seriously): -One of your characters can be a president in need of a popularity boost, but please, do not make it a Prozac consumer with a nervous breakdown. -One of your main characters might be a B**CH willing to do anything to get what she wants, but make it credible. Even Cruella De Vil got some heart. -I do not like X factor/American Idol-like shows, but the people who make it to the final can at least sing and dance better than I do. Not like the Iraq contestant. -If you plan to include a terrorist camp making footage of their training, please make it look like they are making footage and not a Hollywood blockbuster - forget the sound technician, it does not make it credible. -You can use the estranged boyfriend/disposable war hero character, but please do not make it a d*mb*ss. -The camp cousin is just not funny. Really. This movie is bad as rom com, chick flick, satire and anything else. I believe that they tried to do something similar to what Ben Stiller and the Farreli Brothers do when they make a film together, but it turned awfully bad. And I do not like Stiller/Farreli films.

American Dreamz

jimski from from Corwen, 13th September, 2008

I started watching this film with some reserve as Hugh Grant films can be hit and miss. However it was pretty good especially as it was an American film and they usually cannot do satire. It was cynical all through although unlike the best satires the characters had redeeming features which lets them off the hook. They couldn't resist letting the president off in the end. Don't worry that doesn't give the end away.

Americian Dreamz

A Customer from Ipswich, 10th September, 2008

I rented this film, because I thought it would be great. potientally, it should have been...great actors, great idea for the film. But we had to turn it off 40 minutes in, not only was it completely dull and boring. The script dragged and I was so dissapointed. Please, for your own sake, don't waste money renting or buying this movie. One of the worst I've ever seen and I watch almost anything, so it has to be bad.
