Sexual Perversity in LA
Rehan from , 28th March, 2006
This is a seriously weird film, one which falls firmly into the Why-Would-Anyone-Bother category. It depicts the highly improbable and sexualised relationship between two brothers who are BOTH some sort of pop star: unlikely, to say the least. When they get off with each other's former lovers, it becomes more than a little sick. None of this is helped by acting which is passable but voice control which is wooden to the point of mahogany - listen to the soundtrack and it certainly isn't un-self-conscious (and who would blame them?). The younger brother looking like an only-just-masculine version of Renée Zellweger really doesn't help. Don't bother with this: there are better films to see and life's too short for such creepy nonsense.

Worth seeing

I disagree with the other reviews of this film. I think the sexual relationship of the two brothers was credible - the younger one beginning to discover he's gay; the older one with self-esteem issues and needing to be first in his brother's life. They take these personal isssues and try to resolve them through sex, which is damaging to both of them, although they are reluctant to admit it. I do see a connection between the sexuality and incest. They aren't just playing around with a sibling but a male sibling and clearly take this sexual ambiguity into other relationships as well. So, I did enjoy the central premise of the story. I agree with the other reviewers though that the director/writer took the plot in the wrong direction. The flings with the previous lovers didn't fit with the story at all and were the least convincing part of the film. The rockstar/teen idol plot never really worked either. However, it's rare to see a film about incest and this one captures the heartahces and passions of that illicit relationship quite well.

Did I miss the point of this film? Is it an examination of incest, of coming out, of gay sex or merely of sibling rivalry? The film finished with a dozen unanswered questions and I found it very disappointing, despite the positive review it received. Had the film managed to examine how/why an incestuous relationship had developed between these 2 brothers, then the film might have worked to some degree. As it is, little background is given to past events, and the 2 brothers change their minds regarding their feelings for one another almost on a scene-to-scene basis. The end result for me was that it was just another gay film, but without the obligatory sex scene or any sort of satisfactory ending. The 2 actors playing the brothers did their best, but they could not look more different physically. This, as well as the implausible storyline, made it extremely difficult to believe that they were related as claimed, which surely defeated the entire object of the film? The film's content is controversial and you might anticipate it as being uncomfortable to watch. However be warned that it falls very short of any expectations you might have.

This is a rather rambling little film, with no dramatic thrust and there is a decided lack of conviction. There are some ponderous speeches, especially from Harry - and plot devices that feel decidedly clunky in order to move the story on. None of the issues is explored; none of the drama inherent in the focal issue comes through. The young guy playing Max does his best but towards the end even he seems to realise there is nothing he can do now except get to the end credits.
My, my, my. This is one bizarre movie. Strange acting, terrible dialogue, and a very uncomfortable and unbelievable theme. It is perhaps possible to approach the subject of incest with - dare i say - "sensitivity", but this is a colossal failure. Save yourself and avoid this film.
