Unfolding with the speed and rhythm of an action movie and showcasing stylistic flourishes that hint at Quentin Tarantino, STANDER takes on one of history's most infamous injustices with a surprising amount of humor and vivacity. Set in 1976, the film tells the true story of Andre Stander, a young police captain in Johannesburg, South Africa. His apex of official power coincided with the pinnacle of the devastating policies of apartheid. As the movie illustrates in an evocative and pivotal scene, Stander's view of his society and position within it is profoundly shaken when he kills an unarmed black man during a chaotic anti-apartheid riot. Aware that he lives in a society so devastatingly racist that he is free to murder without consequence, Stander stages an unconventional political protest by robbing banks. As he becomes more and more successful at maintaining a double life as a criminal-cop, his addiction to the thrills and accoutrements of the outlaw lifestyle begin to overshadow any political purpose. Director Bronwen Hughes (best known for helming studio flicks FORCES OF NATURE and HARRIET THE SPY) has skillfully woven together elements of a political tract, character study, and heist movie to a unified and compelling whole. But the movie belongs to its star, Thomas Jane, who seems to dissolve into his complex role, making Stander an irresistibly contradictory antihero.

Very different & very, very good!

younglochinvar from from Prestatyn, 18th September, 2007

A wonderfully atmospheric film that is made even more fascinating by the fact that the story is largely true. A wonderfully charismatic performance by Thomas Jane as the lead Andre Stander.

A real step back in time to 80's SA. Excellent movie, well acted and uncanilly true to life. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Film

moochypooch from Bristol, 28th August, 2005

What makes this film work is the fact that the true story it's based on plays like a great pitch for a movie. This means that unlike a lot of clunky bio-pics which try to spice up real events, this film doesn’t have to.

I loved the 70's feel to it and the cinematography and stylish visuals add to the whole. Also watch out for Dexter Fletcher in a great supporting role.

An unusual and interesting UK / Canada / South Africa co-production that deserves to do better on DVD that its practically non existent cinema run.

Surprisingly good!

Bill55 from essex,, 4th August, 2005

I didn't think that I would like this film but after a slowish start I found myself enjoying it more and more.

What makes this story all the more amazing is the fact that it's based on a true story about a police officer turned super crook. Thomas Jane gives an excellent performance as Stander and if you give the film a chance I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Stander: Worth a Watch.

Not expecting much I enjoyed the film. Not a great film but well worth a rent. Good performances and story (true by the way). I would have preferred a greater amount of info on how much of it was true.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

An obscure story, about a time in South Africa that i knew little about, and i was brought up in Africa! However it is a very accessible film, with a lot of black humour, and a few familiar faces from British films and TV, i have this film in my own DVD collection, and would recommend it to anyone.
