Based on the 1968 film of the same name, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR offers a peak into the nefarious lives of the rich and famous. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is a man with looks, wit, and millions of dollars, yet the only way he can feel truly alive is during the thrill of the heist. When a valuable Monet painting comes to town, Crown decides stealing it would be the ultimate rush. As the New York high society demands justice, little do they--or the police--suspect that one of their very own has committed the crime. Expert Catherine Danning (Rene Russo) is brought in investigate the stolen Monet painting. But as she come closer to proving Crown guilty, she is drawn into his world, and falls in deeply in love with him.
For THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, director John McTiernan takes action elements of his previous films (both the explosive urban setting of DIE HARD and the racy pursuit feel of PREDATOR) and spins them into a sophisticated thriller about the downfalls of wealth and high society.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Glossy, easily enjoyable thriller that aims for sophistication; it plays a little like a James Bond movie without the big-budget stunts.

Sexy, slick and in a different league to the original

LD from Herts, 21st February, 2004

Another film I can watch over and over again and still laugh and cry at the same places every time. The soundtrack is such that whenever I hear the music I am immediately transported to the scenes in the film. The plot is fabulous, leaving you guessing along with the characters, all of whom have a deliciously humerous side. Brosnan and Russo sizzle together and the sexual chemistry between them is palpable.

This film would suit guys & gals as it delivers on several levels.

Good fun (and the soundtrack is worth investing in too.)

stirfry#1 from MALVERN, 18th October, 2003

A good film that gives Norman Jewison's 1968 original starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway a close run for the money. I watched it expecting to be disappointed and wasn't. The chemistry between Brosnan and Russo is what stops this film being a sad remake of a fantastic classic. If you can get hold of the original, do - it looks fabulous (shame I can't find it listed here).

Pierce Brosnan's best film

A Customer from Notting Hill, London, 17th September, 2003

Just one of my favorite films of the past ten years, it's actually better than the original. Pierce Brosnan is superb, Rene Russo is sexy as as hell and the intrigue and plot keeps you guessing. Plus an excellent soundtrack -- all round intelligent, entertaining fun.

Enjoyable Thriller

A Customer from Sheffield, UK, 22nd February, 2006

Really enjoyed this thriller - nothing too heavy but it does draw you in. Russo is captivating as the ruthless yet vulnerable girl on the right side of the law and Brosnan is as suave as ever playing the commitment phobic millionaire financier with criminal tendencies. The plot is maybe a little patchy at times and relies very heavily on the performances (& sexual chemistry) of the two stars. Despite this, it's definitely worth a watch.

Perice Brosnen at his usual suave best. Very clever and entertaining remake of the old version, on another level, would even work as a sequel. (unlike the 'Italian Job'). See the original, then this and you'll see what I mean.

Very Poor Indeed

A Customer from Southampton, 20th April, 2008

What starts out looking like a fast-paced crime caper rapidly descends into a meaningless series of slushy romantic interludes. Two characters motivated by greed, money and excitement soon forget their cold-hearted corporate personas to jet around various exotic locations smooching about like teenagers. Although they enter into their affair with the express intent to manipulate one another, it’s not long before their steely resolve disintegrates and they are both awash with emotion. The plot twists are predictable and many of the scenes are completely unbelievable. The first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes contain some intrigue and excitement, and Dennis Leary’s performance might just have saved the film if he’d been in it a bit more. The rest of the film is utter pap, you could easily fast-forward the middle hour without missing out on anything. Deplorable.

Thomas Crown Affair

Fantastic film.I think it is better than the original 1968 one. Pierce Brosnan plays the part really well and Rene Russo is very sexy in it. Well worth watching.

An upmarket Ocean's 11

Travis Bickle from London, England, 4th December, 2006

This is a very slick remake of the original Steve McQueen film with a nice nod to Faye Dunaway, who played the love interest in the first film and the psychologist in the second. Piers Brosnan fills the role of suave but unchallenged businessman who plans the theft of a monet painting just for the sake of a challenge. It's very well put together and keeps you guessing the whole way through. Thomas Crown is the archetypal playboy businessman and the scenes of yachting, private jets and caribbean hideaways are great fun. The final sequence keeps you smiling at it's cleverness. Whilst not blessed with a whole lot of substance, it definitely keep me very entertained.
