SOUL FOOD is a warmly atmospheric ensemble drama set around the abundant table of Chicago family matriarch Mother Joe, whose extended brood orbits around the stabilising force of her sumptuous Sunday dinners. However, when dissent brews between the competitive sisters Maxine and Teri, grandson (and narrator) Ahmad tries to reunite the family. This moving film, written and directed wonderfully by George Tillman Jr., features excellent performances from Vanessa L. Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Irma P. Hall and the rest of the talented cast.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5
Radio Times

This well acted and well made drama focuses, as the title suggests, on the Sunday dinner get-togethers of a large African-American family. Matriarch Irma P Hall's home cooking just about keeps her three grown-up daughters and their partners from each other's throats, until a tragedy forces them to reconcile their differences. This is a terrific ensemble piece, boosted by the unfussy script and direction of George Tillman Jr, with solid performances from Vanessa L Williams, Vivica A Fox , Nia Long and Mekhi Phifer.

heart warming story

Michelle from Slough,Berks, 11th May, 2006

I watched this film one afternoon while my son was having a nap, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a heart warming story of an American black family who all come together every Sunday and their Big Mama cooks them all dinner. Its mainly based on the relationships of the 3 sisters and how the family starts to fall apart when Big Mama goes into hospital and isn't there to help them with all their problems. If your after action or adventure then look else were but if you want to sit and get involved with some really good characters and their lives and loves then check this out. If you liked Waiting To Exhale then you will like this film.

Sentimental cliche

A Customer from Cambridge, 23rd November, 2004

The film could have been a strong statement for the strengths and virtues of family loyalty but has been let down by a continuous stream of cliches

Soul Food

Hillsong from from West Norwood, 27th September, 2008

It as ok there is nothing much to say. Just a family going through their trials and tribulation and how they get back together in the end. This movie is ok to watch on a Sunday if nothing else to do.

a tearjerking granny one

faith from from London, 20th June, 2008

nicely written and acted, a portrait of what any close knit family would have been modelled against. it made me cry it made me laugh it made me able to sit round that table with them and experience what they acted out in this film. that's touching! there were typical family disagreement, peculiar relatives and the hard nosed wanting to control and change everyone the way they deem fit. this film touched me and finding that stash of cash in the end was the cherry on the cake. nice touch. a bit predictable but it had its surprises.

heart warming

Byron Williams from Wolverhampton,England, 1st December, 2006

I have watched this film 3 times now and every time I see it, it reminds me of the difficulties life has to offer ,yet the strength and endurance of a mother's love as portrayed in this moving film, can change the future of not only her children, but for generations to come.A must to see, a great sound track and an excellent script.Highly recommended.

Mekhi - I love you

A Customer from London, 10th November, 2006

A nice film that shows black americans in a positive light. Yes, there's the all neat and tidy happy ending but it's still a good film and as I'm absolutely in love with Mekhi Phifer, it certainly made my evening.
