C Thomas Howell picks up icy passenger Rutger Hauer in this feature debut from director Robert Harmon. As it turns out, Hauer is a serial killer who quickly embroils Howell in a harrowing desert intrigue by implicating him in his sick crimes. Jennifer Jason Leigh, as the waitress who believes Howell's story, adds humanity along the way. Despite the film's huge lapses in logic and moments of wild self-parody, the plot twists generate considerable suspense. It has become something of a cult film, thanks to its surreal style and Hauer's inimitable presence.

A classic

Not so Silent Bob from Edinburgh, 9th October, 2007

Rutger Hauer was the perfect lead for this movie. No it does not answer all the questions, very few in fact. That is what makes the movie so compelling, it is left to the viewers imagination and unlike far inferior films this makse for a far better experience.

Classic horror

skeadugenga from , 26th July, 2004

This film reminds me of 'Duel' and 'Terminator' partly because of the common theme of the nightmare pursuer who is inescapable and partly because they are all classics. The acting in this film is superb and Rutger Haeur makes a splendid villain (this is debatably his finest performance, the android in Bladerunner might be the other contender) This is a great film, everyone should see it at least once, for people with weaker stomachs once might be enough!

Unexpected classic

A Customer from Holborn, London, 26th October, 2003

I'd never heard of this movie, and the opening 10 minutes didn't bode well. Sure enough, an inobtrusive hero picks up a sinister shadowy figure (Rutger Hauer - the Guinness guy), and stilted dialogue doesn't create much anticipation.

However there's only one actual 'hitch' (no pun intended) in the film and yet the plot roars along from one turn to the next, always with the captivating Hauer (in a style that anticipates Hopkins in the Hannibal series) seeming to outmaneouvre our lovable hero.

Though generally more Thriller than Horror there are a couple of really gruesome moments so be warned.

Two truly memorable scenes (the finger and the lock) and some OK bonus commentaries are the icing on the cake for this thoroughly enjoyable movie.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

I only saw 'The Hitcher' for the first time last week and I wish I had discovered it sooner. It's a suspenseful, intriguing and (in the best possible way) frustrating masterpiece of the stalker/ slasher genre. When a young man (C. Thomas Howell) stops to offer Rutger Hauer's unhinged drifter a lift, he is drawn into a fateful game of cat and mouse that the audience feels every step of the way.

There's so much to admire about this film. The acting is top notch, with Hauer particularly engaging as he goes straight for the crazy jugular from the off. Howell is also outstanding, superbly conveying an innocent breaking under the mental and physical rigours he is constantly subjected too. There were also several mythical undertones to the film that really gripped me, such as when Hauer places two coins on Howell's eyes, that hinted at a metaphor for life and death. This added to the poignancy of the characters' experience and gave weight to the brilliantly judged understatement of the ending.

Of course, if you just want a good old fashioned thriller, that's right here too! The direction is excellent and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout and the film is shot in a decidedly raw indie style, which adds a certain grimness to the proceedings. The film is also not afraid to show some less palatable moments of horror that are timed to perfection.

Trust me, you'll think twice about ordering chips with your next burger...
