A young cowboy is seduced by a new girl in town only to find out he has been kissed by a vampire. Slowly turning into a creature of the night, he is persuaded to join up with the girl and a roaming band of ghouls. But when his own father and sister become targets in the vampires' endless search for 'food,' he is forced to choose between loyalty to the vampires, or loyalty his own family. NEAR DARK is a stylish and brutal mixture of horror, western, and action conventions from director Kathryn Bigelow (STRANGE DAYS) that ranks among the best vampire movies ever made.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5
Radio Times

This 1980s horror landmark — an undead revamp of Bonnie and Clyde — is one of the best vampire movies ever made. Adrian Pasdar stars as the luckless farm boy inducted by seductive Jenny Wright into her itinerant family of gangster bloodsuckers, who manage to keep one step ahead of the law and daylight. Director Kathryn Bigelow blends the road movie, the western and the horror genres into one visually stunning and frightening package, spinning a genuinely scary tale that slickly examines the violent lifestyle of the outlaw gang. Along for the ride are Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton, who give standout degenerate performances.

Gak

KingLoftiVII from , 26th July, 2006

80's gak i'm afraid, terrible acting, unbelievably cliched plot, a waste of time. The ending is hilarious though, utterly ridiculous.......i'd rather set myself on fire.

this is a great film, very stylishly executed, with great character development(unusual for a 'horror' film),a blinding sountrack by tangerine dream too.definately recommended to film buffs everywhere.

I really liked this film, it's flawed in places but when it's good it's really good.

One star for royal mail for taking this film away

Mark from Doncaster, England, 19th September, 2006

One star for royal mail for taking this film away from my house. Imagine the worst plot/budget/dated vampire film you have seen, then substitute 'vampire' for 'exploding gypsy' and you will get the idea that this film is not worth watching. I would like to see all those, who gave this more than 1 star, outside in the Tesco car park for a good sorting out.

The film you have heard about.......

serendipityneverland from from Watford, 26th September, 2008

This was a film i always meant to watch, but never got round to watching. There is a lot of hype surrounding this film - esp with a lot of director/writers citing this as the greatest the genre has to offer. You have to remember this is a low budget 80's film. so editing and effects are not going to match modern standards. This was pre buffy and all the recent modern takes on vampires. This with lostboys brought vampires uptodate. It boasts a cracking story but the script as with most great eighties films(dialogue wise does not stand the test of time). If you know what your renting this is a great movie - think Hitcher(80's version)with vampires. Defo requiring big budget remake with fleshing out the charecters even more. But watch and see where modern takes on old horror all began

Classic 80's vampire horror!

Nik from , 12th March, 2008

A young man -Caleb- falls for the beautiful Mae but she isn't quite what she seems and pulls him into a nightmare world of blood drinking and a brush with immortality. 'Near Dark' is a great updating of the vampire myth - even though the 'v' word is never actually mentioned. It is also one of director Kathryn Bigalow's best films (up there with 'Strange Days' and 'Point Break'). Aside from two effective lead actors, 'Near Dark' benefits greatly from the casting of Lance Henrikson, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein (hot from filming 'Aliens') who have a great chemistry and lift the film into another league altogether. There is an atmospheric score by Tangerine Dream which really suits this journey into the night. The concept of blood as a source of life AND death fits with the awareness of AIDS which was very pertinent in 1987. File along with 'The Hitcher' as a great late 80's horror film set in the dusty American South.

Definately different

Helen Hail from Sunny Wales, 27th December, 2007

A wonderful film, dark and lots of atmosphere. Lots of age jokes and sideways glances and a great reminder that you can't kill vampires with bullets (for your info, next time you meet one)
