Radio Times

As you would expect of a film based on the autobiography I, Tina and on which Tina Turner herself acted as on-set adviser, this is hardly the most objective showbiz biopic of all time. While Angela Bassett should be applauded for her beautifully observed portrait of the singing superstar, perhaps greater credit should be given to Laurence Fishburne for his warts-and-all performance as Ike, the man who, for all his faults, put Tina in the spotlight. Both stars deserved their Oscar nominations for virtually carrying a picture that looks and sounds great, but is a little oversimplified dramatically.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Excellent performances by the two leads, some well-staged musical numbers and marital rows and lusty singing by Tina Turner herself make this a better than average picture of its kind.

Great!

I thought this film was great. To watch someone go through all that pain and hurt then come out on top is amazing. It is a film that I would definitely watch again.

Absolutely Brillant

Can't say anything bad about this film. Angela Bassett makes you believe she is Tina Turner from her voice to her stage routine that is so Tina.

One of my favourites even second time round.

AWESOME!

If you haven't seen this movie, RENT IT NOW! A truly powerful telling of the life of Tina Turner, played brilliantly by Angela Bassett. At times very difficult to watch without cringing, at times amusing. I couldn't help punching my fist in the air when Tina triumphed against all odds to become the person she is today. Laurence Fishburne is brilliant in this too! Tina Turner is one of today's most much-loved superstars and as this film proves, she deserves everything it all after what life has thrown at her. A remarkable movie! TOP MARKS!

The fact that Tina Turner herself acted as 'on-set advisor' for this film comes as a small surprise. While this isn't an attempt to condone or even justify Ike Turner's violent behaviour, Tina does emerge from the film as a beatific presence - with a great voice. Ultimately, it's an uplifting film, chronicling Turner's rise to fame, dip into onscurity and back again. What could have been soggy TV-movie-of-the-week territory is kept taut and intriguing by director Brian Gibson. The attention to period detail and the staging of the concert song numbers is spectacular, and the story is injected with just enough humour to keep the more harrowing scenes from appearing sensationalised. The real draw here is the acting, though. There was never any doubt that Laurence Fishburne was a great screen presence and a fine actor. Here, his Oscar nominated Ike Turner is a well-rounded creation, given much more depth than the script might have suggested. Angela Bassett carries the film with panache and style. Much more than a canny impersonation, her Tina is real, rooted and determined. A genuinely head-turning performance, without being too showy, her Oscar nomination is well deserved. All in all, a classy biopic with some great acting.

What can I say about this film? It is very well acted and very brave of Tina to have her life exposed like that. I cant even begin to say how much I enjoyed this film - in fact I actually give it 10 stars!!!

Having watched Dreamgirls that made me want to watch this and they happen to be two very different films but both brilliant in the story telling. Angela Bassett is just fantastic.

Excellent movie

Angela Basset shines in this film, leaving Fishburne eclipsed. A good story, well acted.
